Week 1 begins with rolls of coins. Some students might already know the exact amount in these rolls. That's fine. However, I would be willing to bet all the coins from this week's estimates that over half of our students don't know the value of a roll of pennies, nickels, dimes, or quarters. With the invention of machines like CoinStar, who rolls coins anymore, right? I hope you take some informal polls and let me know. Regardless, before we dive into some heavy coin estimates during weeks two and three, I figure we give students a really low-entry point this week.
Day 146: Pennies
Day 147: Nickels
Day 148: Dimes
Day 149: Quarters
Day 150: A cent sign made of pennies.
We end the week by using estimation to complete a cent sign made of pennies. This "completion" idea came to me earlier in the year during St. Patrick's Day. I really enjoyed it then, and had a little more fun with it this time.
What will be the value of the finished cent sign?
