Summer Estimates (part 1)

8/16/2013

Estimation 180 took a bit of a summer break. However, a couple of productive contributions include the guest posts from other educators and the Estimation 180 handout post.

As we warm up for the new school year, I'm adding a few estimates that came up during the past couple of summer months. Happy summer (what's left of it)! Enjoy:
Day 161: Remember all those coins? I took them to my bank's Coinstar to deposit them.
Day 162: Let's find the combined weight of the bowl and all those coins from Day 161.
Day 163: Another height estimate. I know. This one comes from my time at Drexel University working with The Math Forum and other educators during our EnCoMPASS work.
Day 164: Nothing says summer better than water play, right? How many people can squeeze into this pool?
Day 165: How many people can squeeze into this large pool?

Speaking of summer and pools, check this out. I came across this at my sister's pool. I'm extremely curious about this. How cool?!

I invited a handful of people to write some guest blog posts for Estimation 180.

Read their stories here.

Now it's your turn! Share with us!

Your story can be anything you want it to be. Where has estimation successfully been implemented:
  • In your classroom
  • With students
  • With teachers
  • In life
  • Elsewhere
How has estimation helped:
  • Build number sense
  • Foster conversations
  • Utilize the 8 Standards for Mathematical Practice
  • Find reasonable answers
  • Anything else that strikes you.

You can keep it short and sweet. I'm not necessarily looking for you to talk about Estimation 180, just share with others your insight. Thanks in advance!

I believe estimation is key to building number sense and being a better problem solver. I explore middle school math with my students.
